Richard Benovic was shot and killed during a child custody exchange at Denton City Hall on Friday evening, May 7, 2010. Gary Landers, a retired federal law enforcement officer was arrested for the shooting and is expected to face murder charges.
Mr. Benovic and his ex-wife were exchanging possession of their two children. Mr. Landers (a friend of Mr. Benovic's ex-wife) and Mr. Benovic got into an altercation in the parking lot. After the altercation, Mr. Landers pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at Benovic, who was unarmed. Mr. Benovic died of multiple gunshot wounds.
