Q: How long does the divorce process take in Texas?
A: The length of the divorce process can vary. A divorce lawsuit may be completed as early as 60 days from the filing of the Original Petition for Divorce. But in many cases, it can take substantially longer than 60 days if the parties disagree as to the terms of the divorce, including the division of property and custody of any children. Texas law requires that a couple seeking a divorce allow a "cooling off" period of 60 days to expire before the judge and parties sign a final decree of divorce. The 60-day period is intended to allow the parties an adequate opportunity to resolve their differences and possibly reconcile before the divorce becomes final.
