Q: What does "contempt" mean?
A: Contempt is a remedy often used to compel a parent to pay child support who has failed to do so, or to punish a party who has denied access to the children, violated the other party's rights with regard to property, or physically or verbally assaulted a party in violation of a court order. A party found to be in contempt of court may be punished with jail time, fines, or both.
