Many of our clients have seen so many courtroom television shows that they have unrealistic expectations about the divorce process and divorce attorneys in general. We always explain to our clients that they should let us take care of the legal end of the divorce, but that they have responsibilities and things to keep in mind to survive the divorce process with as little emotional and financial difficulty as possible. Below is a list of items divorce clients should consider throughout the divorce process:
1.Keep your emotions in check. Divorce can be one of the most emotionally draining experiences you can go through, and in many cases, the process can last for an extended period of time. Although it may be difficult, you should try to approach the divorce process like a business transaction as much as possible to avoid emotionally charged (and in many cases, poor) decisions.
2. Allow your divorce lawyer to do his or her job. You and your spouse should have as little contact as possible during the divorce to avoid messy arguments and confrontations. If you and your spouse cannot remain civil during the divorce, you can always instruct your spouse to speak with your lawyer instead. Don't be surprised if your spouse attempts to undermine your lawyer's efforts or abilities. When in doubt, always trust your divorce lawyer's advice over that of your spouse.
3. You should avoid voluntarily leaving the family home, as this could have a negative impact on your case. However, if you have been the victim of abuse, you should not hesitate to remove yourself from the home immediately.
4.Do not give your spouse more information than he or she needs to know, and always be skeptical of the information he or she gives you.
5.Avoid antagonizing your spouse with petty remarks or gloating when an issue is decided in your favor.
6.Do not negotiate with your spouse without your lawyer's knowledge. You are paying for your divorce lawyer's negotiation skills and experience, so don't interfere by eliminating your lawyer from the process.
